Movistar achieves 500 thousand clients with 5G and obtains recognition for mobile speed

Sign up for our weekly newsletterSign up for our weekly newsletterMovistar Chile was recognized by Ookla, developer of the popular Speedtest, for offering the fastest mobile internet service in the country during the first half of 2022.The award considered the measurements of all mobile customers made in all technologies, that is, 3G, 4G and 5G, during the first half of 2022, delivering a weighting called Speed ​​ScoreTM (80% download speed and 20% upload ).In the case of the company of Spanish origin, it was 47.05, thus leading the speed of the market.The good results are not only limited to mobile technology.According to Ookla measurements, the average fixed internet speed during July in Chile reached 214 mbps (megabits per second), surpassing countries such as Singapore (204 mbps) and China (188 mbps).In addition, eight internet providers in Chile offer speeds above 100 mbps.Lourenço Lanfranchi, director of Ookla for Latin America, stressed that his measurement information is relevant for users, operators and governments.“It is a unique, impartial recognition, with a large number of samples with high statistical confidence and its methodology is open.Users can do a test to see if it's true or not," Lanfranchi said.From Movistar Chile they assured that a little more than six months after the activation of its 5G network in the country, the deployment exceeds 70% of the committed project, with operation in different areas throughout the 16 regions.The service shows a higher level of progress in Arica, Maule, Tarapacá, O'Higgins, Los Ríos, Aysén and Magallanes, also highlighting its availability in more isolated localities such as Pozo Almonte, Salamanca, Punitaqui, Hualqui, Pitrufquén and also Porvenir."The key is to be consistent and that is what we have achieved in the last year," explained Cristian Schalscha, director of the Personal and Home Market of Movistar Chile, in a conversation with Chócale.In the fiber optic market, the company has around 4 million past homes, that is, homes that have the technical feasibility to have the service.According to the executive, the keys to Movistar's success are speed and its value proposition, ruling out that today prices are driving consumers to hire the service.“Speed ​​is a great contributor to the value equation of choosing a provider, connection stability, symmetry, but we believe that these are attributes that in the medium term will not be a differential.We are very clear that technological advantages are temporary.We have to rely on other types of products, which are complementary”, said Schalscha.In this sense, he mentions as an example the supply of devices for the home, the quality of Wi-Fi solutions, the migration to the new Wi-Fi 6 technology, and even wiring in certain homes to improve connection quality.There is also the incorporation of entertainment solutions and improving the capacity of technical responses, being able to solve customer problems remotely.“Hopefully a technician never has to come to your house,” he said.In addition, he assured that the industry must avoid falling into a price war, since there is currently a very competitive level in the service offer of each operator.When asked about reducing the digital divide, Cristián Schalscha from Movistar mentioned that the challenge today is to reach the last 20% of the population, where many companies do not reach.To achieve this goal, he mentioned the possibility of incorporating subsidies for users.“We are in favor of a demand subsidy model.If as a country I am willing to subsidize water, electricity and gas to someone who cannot have it, why is the connection not subsidized?If today it is a basic element, it is a very efficient and fast path, which would allow us to make a quick jump”, concludes Schalscha.
