On June 26, the natural world heritage site celebrates its 13th birthday. On this occasion, locals are invited to a free mudflat hike.On June 26th it's that time again: The Danish-German-Dutch Wadden Sea celebrates the anniversary of its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. As in previous years, this occasion should be honored and celebrated together with the inhabitants of the coast and island. The national park administration, together with national park guides, would like to once again make it possible for locals to take part in a mudflat excursion free of charge on June 24th, 25th and 26th."The aim of the campaign is to arouse and encourage people's enthusiasm for the uniqueness of the Wadden Sea," says National Park Director Peter Südbeck.Because it is precisely the local people who play a major role in preserving the natural world heritage for future generations.Last year, more than 300 locals accepted the offer and explored this special nature and landscape on their doorstep - according to their own statements, some had their feet in the mud for the first time and were very impressed. The commitment of the providers creates good conditions for this: This year, 22 are taking part, more than ever before, and are offering 45 public events at 20 locations. The spectrum ranges from child-friendly mudflat tours for families to atmospheric sunset walks and bird safaris to more athletic mudflat crossings from the mainland to the islands of Minsener Oog and Baltrum. There are barrier-free offers for people with disabilities, whether with the Wattmobile or the opportunity to experience the animal world in the World Heritage Site while keeping your feet dry on the edge of the mudflats.Registration is required for the offers, as well as weather-appropriate clothing and suitable footwear. The providers will inform you about this when you register. All dates and further information at www.nationalpark-wattenmeer.de and www.welterbegeburtstag.deThe dates for 2022 in alphabetical order by municipality:June 24th and 26th, 3 p.m.: Discover the mudflats – experience nature in the coastal mudflats for young and old.
