NEW YORK (AP) — Ah, the bacon, egg and cheese. The classic bodega breakfast sandwich is a staple in many a New Yorker's diet. It's easy to make, easy to eat on the go and cheap — although not as cheap as it used to be.
To keep up with today's levels of inflation due to the pandemic and Russia's war with Ukraine, bodega owners are faced with no choice but to raise the prices of their famously low-priced breakfast sandwiches.

Cal Raleigh homered in the seventh inning, lined an RBI double in the ninth and scored the winning run on Carlos Santana’s sacrifice fly, and the Seattle Mariners rallied for a 5-4 win over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night. Seattle won its seventh straight over the Rangers and its ninth consecutive game decided by one run. Since losing to Oakland on July 1, the Mariners are 16-3 with the only three losses coming last weekend to Houston. Santana hit a fly ball to center field that was deep enough for Raleigh to score the winning run.
OAKLAND — The A’s continued their impressive play since returning from the All-Star break by beating the Houston Astros 5-3 at the Coliseum on Tuesday night, powered by a third-inning grand slam from Chad Pinder.
Luis Garcia hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning and the last-place Washington Nationals rallied past the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-3 for their second straight win against the NL West leaders. Garcia’s shot into the right-field seats with two outs against Los Angeles left-hander Garrett Cleavinger was his third home run of the season and brought home Josh Bell, who reached first on a throwing error by Dodgers second baseman Gavin Lux. Washington scored four more times against Cleavinger in the ninth, improving their major league-worst record to 34-65. The Dodgers have baseball’s second best record at 64-32.

Asian stock markets have followed Wall Street lower as traders prepare for a possible sharp interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve to cool inflation. Shanghai, Hong Kong and Seoul declined. Tokyo advanced. Oil prices were little changed, staying below $100 per barrel. Wall Street tumbled after Walmart warned inflation that has spiked to a four-decade high of 9.1% is hurting American consumer spending. The Fed is expected to announce a rate hike of up to three-quarters of a percentage point, triple its usual margin. Investors worry aggressive action by the Fed and central banks in Europe and Asia to cool inflation might derail global economic growth.

Chad Pinder hit his second grand slam in two weeks, Frankie Montas pitched five innings in what could be his final outing with Oakland and the Athletics held off the Houston Astros 5-3. Tony Kemp had an RBI double and Stephen Piscotty doubled twice for the A’s. Oakland has won five of six. The A’s were out-hit 7-6 and committed an error that led to an unearned run but beat the major leagues’ best road team for the second night in a row before another small crowd of 5,130. Montas allowed three runs, two earned, and worked around three walks to win for the first time since June 11.
Luis Urías delivered a game-ending sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to bring home Andrew McCutchen as the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Minnesota Twins 7-6. McCutchen started the winning rally with a one-out single off Tyler Duffey, who then walked Kolten Wong and Hunter Renfroe to load the bases. Urías followed with a fly ball, and McCutchen slid home head first well ahead of right fielder Alex Kiriloff’s throw. Urías homered earlier in the game and Renfroe and Wong also went deep. Renfroe has homered in four of the Brewers’ five games since the All-Star break.
Kelsey Plum scored 12 of her 24 points in the first quarter as the Las Vegas Aces raced to an early 23-point lead, then held on for a 93-83 victory over the Chicago Sky to win the second WNBA Commissioner’s Cup championship. Plum, who won the All-Star MVP in Chicago a few weeks ago, hit six of her nine 3-point attempts. Chelsea Gray had 19 points — including nine pivotal ones in the third quarter — and earned MVP of the game. Small, ancient sculptures that have been gathering dust in an Albuquerque storage box are returning home to Mexico. The dozen items will be given to the Mexican government in a ceremony Wednesday in Albuquerque. The Olmec greenstone sculptures, Zacatecas figure and other objects are intertwined with the identity of Indigenous communities. Private donors gave the artifacts to the Albuquerque Museum Foundation in 2007. The Foundation discovered them five months ago and looked into their origins. Mexican officials say these pieces are important elements of memory and identity. Their return comes as communities push for museums and other institutions to repatriate items that are of historic and cultural value.

Oregon Governor Kate Brown has declared a state of emergency for much of the state, whose largest city hit triple digits on Tuesday. Forecasters have issued an excessive heat warning for parts of Oregon and Washington state. They predict Portland could break its previous heat wave duration records of six consecutive days that are 95 degrees or warmer. Portland officials have opened emergency cooling centers in public buildings and have installed misting stations in parks.
Republicans Josh Hawley of Missouri and Ted Cruz of Texas led the Senate challenge on Jan. 6, 2021, to Joe Biden's victory. But the senators have largely escaped the House panel's investigation into the Capitol attack. In all, a dozen GOP senators initially planned to challenge Donald Trump’s defeat. But unlike their House GOP counterparts, the Republican senators have not been called to testify. That's left senators to explain themselves on their own terms. Hawley, for one, says he doesn't regret his actions. Neither Hawley nor Cruz will say whether he would appear before the committee if called.

Australian inflation is rising farther, according to new data that increases the likelihood of the central bank next week hiking interest rates for a fourth consecutive month. The Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Wednesday inflation in the year through June was 6.1%, up from 5.1% in the year through March. Inflation only rose by 3.5% during the last calendar year. Economist Angela Jackson predicts the Reserve Bank of Australia will lift the cash rate by half a percentage point to 1.85% at its next monthly board meeting on Aug. 2. The bank made rises of that size in its July and June meetings. The rate rose by a quarter of a percentage point in May.
